What have been the cutest things around lately, I ask? Why, Baby Yoda and Baby Groot, of course! Oops, I mean ‘Generic Green Baby’ and ‘Generic Tree Baby’ (Please don’t sue me, oh vast and mega-powerful corporation of the Almighty Round-Eared Mouse!) Therefore, it was only natural to double the cuteness and draw them both together.
I used a mix of Windsor & Newton Promarkers, my miserably minute amount of Copics, and some Spectrum noir markers to lay down the base colours. I added colour pencils for subsequent layers mainly Faber-Castell Polychromos and Derwent Drawing. I recently picked up a very, very tiny Sakura Pigma Micron drawing pen (005) which was a dream to pick out very, very tiny lines and details. I hadn’t realised until very recently that Sakura Pigma Microns come in several non-black colours! As soon as this discovery was made, a swift order was sent to Cult Pens. The Blue-Black, Green, Hunter Green and Fresh Green came in very handy. Because I hadn’t really thought of using coloured fineliners in previous drawings, I also reached for my Sepia Derwent Graphik Line Makers (0.3, 0.5 & 0.1) pens which I’ve had for ages but never used for some bizarre reason. These were perfect for Baby Groot’s, Generic Tree Baby’s twiggy details.
I had a load of fun doing this picture and it didn’t take too long either – something I’ve found is usually the case when I use markers for initial layers.
Here are some of the stages leading up to the final picture.
Right! I think it’s time to put the kettle on and have a nice cup of tea!
